From raw clay to terracotta: the Orci project

Montelupo Fiorentino is the Tuscan town famous for ceramics, with a long tradition of crafting terracotta amphorae known in Italian as "orci". Fattoria di Petrognano celebrates this local craft with a wine made in these characteristic amphorae. The "Orci" line comes in two versions — Orci Sangiovese and Orci Trebbiano — and yields exceptionally pure, balanced wines, where extended contact with the skins draws out the character of the soil. The clay also lends excellent structure and an original flavour thanks to a high polyphenol content. The painstaking, largely manual method makes these wines rare — no more than a few thousand bottles a year.

Grape variety: Trebbiano

Vinification: Orci Trebbiano is a white full of vitality, where a long maceration gives this often-underrated variety an intriguing, multifaceted structure; skin contact in the amphorae adds longevity, letting it develop well over time. The best grapes from one of Petrognano's historic vineyards are selected. Stored well, it reaches its peak in around 10 years.

Tasting notes: Bright golden yellow. Aromas of apricot, ripe peach and medicinal herbs. Bold and firm on the palate, with freshness and volume, and a lightly savoury, citrus-tinged finish. Youthful and refreshing, with a vitality that will show its best in a few years.

Food pairing: Asian cuisine, fish, white meat, fish soups, semi-hard cheeses and mushroom dishes.

Alcohol content: 12.5% vol.

Serving temperature: 14–16°C.
