The Pellegrini family's ties to wine date back to the late eighteenth century — first with a tavern, later selling wine and must wholesale in Lombardy. Their winegrowing began when they acquired Fattoria di Petrognano in the 1960s. Emanuele Pellegrini, now the fourth generation, leads the estate on clear principles: honouring tradition through applied research, environmental sustainability and passion.
Grape variety: 95% Sangiovese, 5% Canaiolo
Vinification: MEME Chianti Riserva comes from the best grapes in the estate's oldest parcels — vines around 60 years old. A longer maceration yields a more concentrated, long-lived Sangiovese, which then calls for extended ageing in concrete and large barrels plus a further 18 months in small oak barrels and months in bottle. It is made only in the best vintages.
Tasting notes: An unfiltered, purplish red with an opaque colour. Complex on the nose — sweet spice, clove, liquorice, medicinal herbs and dried flowers — opening to dried red fruit and leather. The palate is fresh at first, with lively tannins and good balance; the warm harvest gives density and a concentration of well-integrated, dry tannins. Long-lived, with plenty in store.
Food pairing: excellent with roast pork, boar and lamb, goose or duck, and hard cheeses. Stored well, it reaches its peak in around 20 years.
Alcohol content: 14% vol.
Serving temperature: 16–18°C.
