Château Pontet-Canet 2021 is an elegant and refined red wine from Pauillac, Bordeaux, classified as a Fifth Growth in the historic 1855 classification. A pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture, the estate combines exceptional terroir with a deep respect for nature. Despite the challenging weather conditions of 2021, favourable conditions towards the end of the growing season produced a wine of remarkable freshness, precision and finesse.
Grape varieties: 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot.
Vinification: The grapes are carefully selected and destemmed before undergoing gentle, minimally interventionist vinification in traditional wooden and concrete vats. The wine is aged for approximately 16–18 months, with around 50% in new French oak barrels, 35% in concrete amphorae and 15% in previously used barrels. This approach preserves the purity of the fruit, the elegance of the tannins and the natural expression of the terroir.
Tasting notes: An intense, brilliant purple colour. The elegant and complex bouquet reveals aromas of strawberry, blackcurrant, hazelnut and cedar, complemented by delicate floral and menthol notes. On the palate, the wine is beautifully structured, with a creamy texture and fine yet firm tannins. Flavours of redcurrant, dried thyme and subtle spices lead to a long, fresh and harmonious finish.
Food pairing: Excellent with roasted lamb, grilled beef, duck breast, game dishes and wild mushrooms. Also pairs beautifully with mature hard cheeses.
Alcohol content: 13% vol.
Serving temperature: 16–18°C
Classification: Pauillac AOC, 5ème Grand Cru Classé (1855).
Awards: Wine Enthusiast 97/100, VINUM 96/100, James Suckling 95/100, Wine Spectator 92/100.
