Amarone, synonymous with Valpolicella, is an exciting challenge for the Pieropan estate — born from the desire to see whether the Cellore d'Illasi vineyards could rival the unique terroir of Valpolicella. It is the realisation of the family's dream: a powerful, rich, structured red that still carries the Pieropan hallmarks of balance, elegance and finesse.
Grape variety: 60% Corvina Veronese, 30% Corvinone, 5% Rondinella, 5% Croatina Veronese
Vinification: The grapes are dried naturally, then pressed and de-stemmed. The must ferments at 23–24°C for about 30 days, with daily pumping-over and punching-down of the cap. The wine ages 24–30 months in 225- and 500-litre barrels, followed by a period in bottle before release.
Tasting notes: Brilliant, intense ruby red. A characterful nose of black cherry, blackberry and plum. On the palate it is complex and rounded, with a powerful structure supporting the fruit and a lovely freshness on the finish — a wine with real character and excellent ageing potential.
Food pairing: an excellent partner for game, grilled or braised meat and powerfully flavoured mature cheeses; also ideal to share among friends at the end of a meal.
Alcohol content: 16.5% vol.
Serving temperature: 16–18°C.
Awards: James Suckling 95/100, Robert Parker 92/100, Wine Hunter Award Gold.
