Predappio, in Emilia-Romagna, has always been considered the home of Sangiovese. Here Francesco Condello and his family fulfilled their dream of their own winery. This wine comes from the best grapes of the eponymous vineyard, planted with Sangiovese and perfectly exposed to the east — and it is that morning light that gives it its name, Raggio Brusa, or "Burning Ray".

Grape variety: 100% Sangiovese

Vinification: after harvest the grapes reach the cellar as quickly as possible, where they are selected and gently pressed. Fermentation follows in large oak vats at controlled temperature; once complete, the Raggio Brusa ages a few further months in French oak.

Tasting notes: Intense, clear ruby. The nose captures the fruit — cherry and blackberry typical of the variety — giving way to floral and balsamic notes of Mediterranean scrub, leather and damp earth. Powerful and crisp on the palate, with tannins of rare elegance, a savoury edge and a long finish that calls for another sip. Built to age well in bottle.

Alcohol content: 14.5% vol.

Food pairing: structured dishes — red meat, aged cheeses, game.

Serve at 16–18°C.
