Nestled in the northern part of Italy, Valtellina is a small but remarkable wine-producing area with a long history and a unique character. The most famous grape variety in Valtellina is Nebbiolo, locally known as Chiavennasca. Nebbiolo is the same grape responsible for the renowned Barolo and Barbaresco wines of Piedmont. In Valtellina, it takes on a unique character due to the region's terroir and microclimate. After four years of experimentation, Sandro Fay decided to grow grapes that are suitable for partial drying (appassimento in Italian) in one high-altitude vineyard featuring peculiar characteristics. The resulting wine is Sforzato Ronco del Picchio, whose name refers to a small wooded area behind the vineyard that was studied during the first research phase, always in the hamlet of Carterìa.

Grape variety: Nebbiolo (Chiavenasca)

Vinification: Drying of grapes in boxes for about three months after the harvest. Ageing in barrique for 12 months.

Tasting notes: A deep garnet red colour. Nose is powerful, with intense hints of ripe red fruits, morello cherry and dried plum, which are followed by spicy and tobacco notes. In the mouth it is broad, powerful, with great body but a balance that conceals the important alcohol content, tannins present but not aggressive, good acidity. Excellent persistence.

Food pairing: meat, better if stewed or braised. Game with sauces and local cheeses are ideal companions.

Alcohol content: 15.5% vol.

Serving temperature: 16-18°C

Awards (vintage 2013): Super Tre Stelle in Guida Oro Veronelli 2018, Slow Wine Awards 2018
